Alexandra Bridge repairs extended as severe deterioration discovered

GATINEAU, QUE. — The Alexandra Bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic following an inspection of the steel structure.

More severe deterioration due to corrosion was detected and therefore the ongoing  on the over 120-year-old bridge will require more work than originally expected before the bridge reopens, a release indicates.

Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) is advising motorists the current closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic will need to be extended to complete essential rehabilitation and repair work that will ensure the bridge remains safe. The closure, originally expected from October 2023 to fall 2024, is now extended to February 2025.

During this period, one lane will remain accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

In parallel to the boardwalk and articulation repair project, PSPC also continues to advance the , which aims to replace the end-of-life structure with a new bridge, adds the release.

PSPC is working with partners and stakeholders, including the cities of Gatineau and Ottawa, to minimize traffic disruptions to its NCR transportation network.
