VANCOUVER – The City of Vancouver has announced the Kitsilano Pool will remain closed throughout the summer to allow staff to address core issues that were identified late last year.

Despite repairs made during the off-season, the pool is still losing a substantial amount of water, making it impossible to balance pool chemicals, a Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation release said.

Vancouver Coastal Health has confirmed the pool cannot be operated safely currently.

Extended closure will allow staff to investigate ongoing water loss and make repairs to the underground piping and basin required to extend the facility’s useful life, the release said, with plans to also install a custom liner that is expected to extend the life of the pool.

Kitsilano Pool was built more than 50 years ago and is at the end of its service life, with many components failing, deteriorating and in need of repairs.

The park board will extend operating hours at Second Beach Pool throughout the summer starting June 12th.

A report to the Vancouver Park Board on Dec. 11, 2023 warned the pool was “untenable going forward” after not only reaching its end-of-life but also withstanding severe weather in January 2022 and a nearby fire in 2023. At the time it was determined the pool was leaking 30,000 litres per hour.
