PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Conservative Party of British Columbia Leader John Rustad announced a new plan on Sept. 26 in Prince George to address energy concerns in northwest B.C. by focusing on local power generation.

He highlighted communities such as Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert as facing rising energy costs.

“The solution is to increase local power generation in the northwest to bring down costs and increase energy security,” said Rustad. “It’s not building costly power lines from the northeast that would raise costs for BC hydro customers across the province.”

A Conservative Party of BC release said its plan would focus on use of sustainable wood waste that will be used to generate power locally as well as leveraging natural gas as a stable and cost-effective energy supply.

Rustad said energy costs for residents in Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rubert and other northwest communities would be dramatically reduced as a result of a decrease in natural gas delivery charges.
