TORONTO — The fourth annual Canadian Building Diversity Awards were recently handed out to deserving individuals and organizations.
The Building Diversity Awards Gala was held June 14 at the Meridian Arts Centre in Toronto. This year’s theme was Building a Sustainable Future, honouring the visionaries and trailblazers fostering a more inclusive future in the construction industry.
The Leading on Diversity Award, presented to an owner/client/developer making extraordinary efforts to ensure underrepresented groups are accessing jobs and opportunities in construction, was presented to The Daniels Corporation.
The Contractor Leading on Diversity Award went to NCC Investment Group Inc.
The Canadian District of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America won the Union Leading on Diversity Award.
Bubba Qwulshemut was presented with the Mentor NexGen Builders Award. The award recognizes a current or past construction industry labourer, journeyperson or experienced professional who served as a mentor and has excelled in supporting the professional growth and development of a mentee.
Nikki Muswaggon won the NexGen Builders Award for a mentee, recognizing a new construction pre-apprentice, apprentice or professional participating in a mentoring program. The nominee has experienced exceptional progress in taking the steps needed to succeed in their career.
Purpose Construction was given the Employer NexGen Builders Award. The award recognizes a construction industry employer (organization) that has excelled in supporting the welcome and professional growth and development of diverse workers in the workplace.
The Champion Community Benefits Award went to Brenda Ireland. The award recognizes an individual whose dedication to advancing community benefits in policy and/or practice at the systems level within the construction industry has significantly benefited equity deserving groups accessing social, environmental and economic benefits from investment in infrastructure and urban development.
The Community Benefits Award Coalition Award recognizes a community benefits coalition in Canada that has achieved or has made significant progress in advancing negotiations for a community benefits agreement. It was presented to Trades NL: Building Trades of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Rexdale-Casino Woodbine Community Benefits Agreement won the Project Community Benefits Award. The award recognizes a major construction project for which there is a formal community benefits agreement in place and that has demonstrated positive outcomes that meet or exceed those stated in the agreement. The award recognizes jointly the community, labour and industry stakeholders that are leading the implementation.
The Contractor to Watch Award honours a standout emerging minority owner contractor or social enterprise from each Canadian province and territory and recognizes those demonstrating readiness to successfully compete for construction contracts in the industrial, commercial and institutional sector.
In Ontario, the winner was Fastwel Contractors Inc.; in Quebec it went to Retrofit Construction; and in Nova Scotia it went to Carvery’s Construction Ltd.
Community Benefits Award Lifetime Achievements were also handed out to Clifton Donegal, David Lepage and Jane Wilson.
