Scaffolding company fined $350,000 after jobsite fatality near Peace River

PEACE RIVER, ALTA. — West Coast Scaffolding Inc. pleaded guilty recently to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker in relation to a fatal incident at a pulp mill near Peace River, Alta. on June 11, 2022.

According to an Alberta government release, a worker was dismantling scaffolding when they fell from a height and suffered fatal injuries.

The company was sentenced on Nov. 4 in the St. Albert Court of Justice. The Crown withdrew eight other charges under OHS legislation.

Under Alberta’s creative sentencing, West Coast Scaffolding Inc. was ordered to pay $350,000 to Athabasca County for the Caslan Volunteer Fire Department for training and purchasing new rescue equipment.

Both the company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalties.
