Algonquins First Nation celebrates launch of water treatment project

Algonquins First Nation celebrates launch of water treatment project

ALGONQUINS OF PIKWAKANAGAN FIRST NATION, ONT. — The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation west of Renfrew, Ont. have announced the start of construction of a new water treatment plant and distribution system.

Chief Greg Sarazin and federal parliamentary secretary to the minister of indigenous services Jenica Atwin participated in a ceremony to mark the occasion May 29. Residents have been relying on individual private wells until now, stated a release.

Construction of the new plant and distribution system is expected to be completed in late 2025, providing drinking water to over 200 homes and several community buildings.

The $80-million project is a partnership between the Algonquins and Indigenous Services Canada. Approximately $73.2 million in funding has been allocated from Indigenous Services Canada with $4.7 million from Infrastructure Canada’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.

Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation is located on Golden Lake and the Bonnechere River in Renfrew County.

“For far too long we have endured unsafe and inadequate water supply to our homes,” stated Sarazin. “This project is critical in meeting the needs of our community for clean, safe and reliable drinking water. It is also essential infrastructure for the future growth of Pikwakanagan.”
