TORONTO — The governments of Canada and Ontario have announcedfundingof $115 million tobe spent oncivic health and recreation infrastructureinmunicipalities across the GreaterToronto and Hamilton Area.
TheGovernment of Canada isallocating$92.1 million through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, and theGovernment of Ontario is contributing $23 million.
The majority offunding will support the rehabilitation of active transit infrastructure, the development ofnewrecreational options, and upgrades and replacement of equipment in health and emergency facilities in communities across theregion, stated a June 9 release.
Additionalfundingwillsupportthe renovation of municipal buildings, communitycentresand cultural facilities.
The COVID-19funding streamhas beenestablishedwith the federal government assuming an 80 per cent share of costson provincial projects.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the well-being of all Canadians and ensuring that residents have access to safe and inclusive community spaces is essential,” saidfederal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKennain a statement.“Across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area we’re investing over $92 million - 80 cents on every dollar – through the COVID-19 Resilience Municipal Stream to support municipalities with better ventilation in building such as shelters, improved accessibility, sidewalk upgrades and new bike lanes, to improve safety and access for residents now and in the future.”
